THE GOULBURN VALLEY BRANCH
The Goulburn Valley Branch was formed in 1994 and currently has around 30-40 Ulysses members attending functions. See the following seperate report for more details of the initial setting up of the Goulburn Valley Ulysses Branch.
The Goulburn Valley Branch is centred in Shepparton on the Goulburn Valley Highway, the main highway to Brisbane. It is approximately 180Km north of Melbourne in a totally different climate due to the Great Dividing Range being located between the two areas. The Goulburn Valley is actually a valley although when travelling through it seems to be a flat area.
The area is referred to as the food bowl of Australia due to the amount and variety of food produced. A large portion of the area is covered by a irrigation network supplied by water from the Eildon Dam and the Goulburn river. In 2009 a modernisation of the irrigation system was commenced with the total cost estimated around 2 Billion plus dollars by the time its completed.
Orchards of Apples, Peaches and Pears are abundant and processed mainly by S.P.C. Pty Ltd.or sent to fresh food markets throughout Australia
Tomatoes, Vineyards, Wheat, Canola, Chick Peas and other crops are grown in the area. Sheep and Dairy cows are also a large part of the rural scene and the economy of the Valley. Alpaca and Goat herds are also common.
The largest town in the area is Shepparton with a population around 33,000 people with other towns, Kyabram, about 7000, Mooroopna about 7,000 and Tatura about 4000 being the main towns near by.
Large food producing companies in the area include Campbell Soups, Rossella Foods, Nestle's, Murray Goulburn, Fontarna Milk and Tatura Milk.
