When the date was set for the Federal election, Julia Gillard obviously didn’t take into account that it was the night set aside for the Inaugural Ulysses Club Bowlerama. Nevertheless, 14 eager participants took up the challenge and enjoyed a great night of laughter and friendship – all without helmet hair!
We divided up into three teams and some of us even donned the always attractive bowling shoes. Bowling at night time is a whole different experience. Disco lights, glow in the dark bits, - and the ability to drink wine or beer.
To say there was a wide variety of bowling skills and action was an understatement. We should have been wary of Lyn Munday when she turned up with her own bowling ball and shoes – this is a woman who knows her way around a bowling alley. Others of us had a slightly less professional look about it all – lots of chuckers, droppers, curve balls and maybe even a googly rather than the smooth roll down to the pins. There was plenty of helpful advice and empathy when things didn’t quite work out – such a supportive lot! There were also some stunning celebratory dances when a strike occurred. Ian P even managed a Toyota style jump in the air after one of his.
Eventually after several hours of bowling, eating hamburgers and chips and drinking beer, a winner was found - which is more than could be said for the election! Kerry Mulgrue had snuck up stealthily in the second game, and with 4 strikes in a row managed to win by 5 points from Lyn. Judy P happily accepted her wooden spoon position – she’d been slightly distracted by election proceedings.
But it still wasn’t time to go home… It was Alan Munday’s birthday and a chocolate mud cake and some happy birthday singing was required. We all had a wonderful time and agreed to do it all again another time.
Thanks to the organisers for stepping outside the square and helping us all have one arm longer than the other!
