At the 2019 AGM held in Mornington, Rex Meredith #17134 was awarded Dearnley Medal #62 and Jenny Meredith #25929 was awarded her Dearnley Medal #64 at the following Branch meeting as she did not attend the National Rally. This was the submission for the award:
Rex Meredith #17134 and Jenny Meredith #25929 are Ulysses Club names that are recognised far and wide due to their long history of Camping Coordination for many AGM Events.
Rex joined the club in 1999 and will achieve his 20-year membership next year at the 2019 Mornington Peninsular Rally.
Jenny followed Rex embracing the club and joining two years later in 2001.
Both Rex and Jenny attended their first AGM event at Geelong in 2004. They stayed off-site with relatives.
The following year they attended the AGM event in Canberra and stayed in a motel. They returned home with a new trailer and a new bike for Jenny, known as the Green Mean Streak.
The National Committee congratulates Rex and Jenny and thanks them for their service
In 2006 at the Ulverstone AGM in Tasmania they began their first on-site camping experience at a Ulysses club event. This in turn encouraged them to get more involved and volunteer at the following 2007 and 2008 AGM events with them both learning much about the organising processes.
Rex and Jenny’s first official position as Site, Camping & OHS Coordinators occurred at the 2009 Nepean AGM in Penrith, Sydney, where Jenny formalised the group booking system for Camping.
Kim Kennerson was National President at that time and can well remember the magnificent effort they contributed to make the Nepean AGM a successful event.
There were unforeseen problems in the camping area that was provided by Panthers League Club.
These problems included underground piping supply for fresh water provisions and also sewerage conveyance. The fixing of these problems was essential.
Frustrated at trying to locate the AGM Coordinator and getting him to take enough interest they approached Kim as the National President and Vic Lesslie as the National Treasurer.
Their advice on fixing the problem was impressive and in turn they were provided with the authority and funds to resolve the issue ASAP.
Kim observed both Rex and Jenny working tirelessly over the entire event period putting in long hours and sometimes near to the point of exhaustion.
He has never forgotten how unselfish and good these two members were as volunteers.
The Meredith’s continued their Camping Coordinator involvement at the 2011 Newcastle Event assisting the Camping Coordinator and running the RV and Medical sections. At the 2012 Mildura and 2013 Maryborough AGM Events, they spent their time volunteering in various areas. They were also the Camping Coordinator for the 2014 Alice Springs AGM Event where they flew to Alice Springs to view the camping ground at their own expense. They have also travelled far and wide to other AGM Events at their own personal expense and time to evaluate the needs of the camping areas.
Initially they were not asked to be the Camping Coordinators for the 2015 AGM Event Albury Wodonga, however at very short notice the newly appointed 2015 Event Director sought their support as coordinators for the campground, they instantly accepted and visited the site on a number of occasions in that 6-month period prior to the Event. Their tireless efforts at Wodonga contributed to the success of the event and the enjoyment of the members in attendance.
They were again asked to be the Campground coordinators for the 2016 AGM Event Launceston where they turned a cow paddock into a very functional and efficient campground again working tirelessly for the Event and the membership. At the Port Macquarie Wauchope AGM Event in 2017 under adverse conditions they managed a split level, split location campground and unseasonal wet weather conditions to produce a very effective campground. In 2018 they were Campground Mentors and assisted with the running of the Campground with the coordinator for the 2018 AGM Event in the Riverland where they created a great campground which saw record numbers of RV’s in attendance and for the first time mix tents and Vans together.
Rex and Jenny are a sought-after asset to any AGM Event/National Rally and have accepted the role of Campground Mentors for Mornington, and for the next 2 as Campground Coordinator and Service Coordinator for Lismore and Campground Coordinators for Mandurah. Their tireless efforts in organising the campgrounds and their invaluable advice to both the AGM Event/Rally Directors NAGMEC/National Rally Organiser has been and will be in the future invaluable to any Rally Team.
During this busy period of serving the Ulysses Club Inc. at AGM Events/Rallies they were both involved in their home Nepean Branch, where Jenny served on the committee, Vice President and was the President for two years.
